How To Use Your TNStars 529 College Savings Plan

Want to learn more about how to manage your TNStars 529 College Savings account? Wondering how to do things like make contributions and withdrawals? If so, then you’re in the right place! However, if you are reading this but are not yet a TNStars member, the first thing you’ll need to do is open an account.

To open a new account for an additional beneficiary, read the Program Disclosure, review your investment options, login to your existing TNStars account, then follow the steps below.

  • 1. Locate the “Account Information” tab on the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select "New Account Setup" from the dropdown menu for "Account Information."
  • 3. Follow the prompts to create a new account. For your convenience, some information will be auto-populated in the enrollment application and will be shown in gray-scale. Once you've completed the process, a confirmation email will be sent to confirm that the new account setup was successful.

Online Instructions: Establish or make changes to an AIP

To establish, update or discontinue an AIP, login to your TNStars account and follow the steps below:

  • 1. Locate the "Accounts Financial Management" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select the "Investment Plan Management" from the dropdown menu for "Accounts Financial Management."
  • 3. Select to Add, Edit, or Delete "Periodic Contributions" located halfway down the page.
  • 4. Follow the prompts then click "Finish." A confirmation email will be sent to verify a change to the account.

Online Instructions: Update registration information

To update your address, e-mail or phone number or that of your Participant Appointee or Beneficiary, log in to your TNStars® account and follow the steps below:

  • 1.Click the "Account Maintenance" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2.Update registration information for the Participant, Beneficiary, and Participant Appointee as needed and click "Finish." A confirmation email will be sent to confirm the updates to your account were successful.

To update your address, e-mail or phone number or that of your Participant Appointee or Beneficiary, complete Sections 1, 2, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form.

Online Instructions: Update bank account information

To update your bank account information, login to your TNStars account and follow the steps below:

  • 1.Locate the "Account Financial Management" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2.Select "Investment Plan Management" from the dropdown menu for "Account Financial Management."
  • 3.Update your bank routing number, name, and/or account number by selecting "Edit" in the section labeled "Bank Accounts."
  • 4.After following the prompt and selecting "Submit," a confirmation email will be sent to confirm the changes to your account were successful.

By Mail:

Update Bank Account Information

To update your address, e-mail or phone number or that of your Participant Appointee or Beneficiary, complete Sections 1, 8, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form and include a voided check or preprinted savings slip.

You may only change your designated beneficiary to a "Member of the Family" of the original beneficiary. To change the designated beneficiary on your account, complete Sections 1, 3, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form.

Online Instructions: Update Participant Appointee Information

To update the information for an existing Participant Appointee, login to your TNStars account and follow the steps below.

  • 1. Click the "Account Maintenance" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. On this screen, information for the Participant Appointee may be updated.
  • 3. Once you have completed the appropriate fields, click "Finish." A confirmation email will be sent to confirm the changes to the account were successful.

Designation of a new Participant Appointee must be requested via the Account Maintenance Form. To designate a new Participant Appointee, complete Sections 1, 4, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form.

If you opened your TNStars account via a paper enrollment form, you may establish an online username and password through following these steps:

  • 1. Click the "Account Login" button located at the top of the screen.
  • 2. Under the field requesting a username, locate "Create New User?" option and click the link.
  • 3. Follow the prompt to create a username.
  • 4. Read and click the "I Agree" box to accept the TNStars® College Savings 529 Program online policies then select "Next."
  • 5. Create a password including a minimum of 6 alphanumeric characters. This password will be case sensitive. During the process, a security question and answer along with a security image and phrase will be created. At the end of the prompts, select "Finish."

 

Manage Investments

Whether you have elected to receive statements and confirmations via postal delivery or e-delivery, all TNStars participants may view statements and confirmations online. To view statements and confirmations online log in to the TNStars account and follow the steps below:

  • 1. Locate the "E-Docs" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select "Statements/Forms" to view quarterly account statements or "Confirms" to view transaction confirmations from the dropdown menu for "E-Docs."
  • 3. If a specific timeframe is needed, the length of time may be designated from the "View" dropdown menu.
  • 4. Select the link for the desired document.

To view your transaction activity, login to your TNStars and follow the steps below:

  • 1. Locate the "Accounts Financial Management" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select "Investment Management" from the dropdown menu for "Accounts Financial Management."
  • 3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the section labeled "Transaction Activity."
  • 4. Select the link for the desired document.
  • 5. Aggregated information can be viewed by exporting to Excel or by clicking the "Summary Account Statement" button. The Summary Account Statement will be viewable by PDF.

Online Instructions: Change allocation for future contributions

You may change your investment option allocation percentages for future contributions at any time. Login to your TNStars account and follow the steps below:

  • 1. Locate the "Account Financial Management" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select "Investment Management" from the dropdown menu for "Account Financial Management."
  • 3. Locate the "Elected Investment Allocation" section towards the bottom of the screen.
  • 4. To edit the allocation, select the "Edit" and follow the prompt to specify the desired modifications to the investment allocation.
  • 5. Click "Submit." A confirmation will be sent to confirm the changes to the account were successful.

By Mail:

Change allocation for future contributions

You may change your investment option allocation percentages for future contributions at any time by completing Sections 1, 6, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form.

Online Instructions: Reallocate existing investment options

You may change/reallocate your investment options twice per calendar year. To perform an exchange, login to your TNStars account and follow the steps below:

  • 1. Locate the "Account Financial Management" tab in the blue navigation bar towards the top of the screen.
  • 2. Select "Investment Management" from the dropdown menu for "Accounts Financial Management."
  • 3. Click "Annual Exchange" located towards the top right of the screen.
  • 4. Follow the prompts to specify the desired change to all past and future contribution allocations and click "Submit". A confirmation email will be sent to confirm the changes to your account were successful.

Reallocate existing investment options

You may change/reallocate your investment options twice per calendar year. To perform an exchange, complete Sections 1, 7, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form.

To transfer funds to another TNStars account, complete Sections 1, 3, and 10 of the Account Maintenance Form. In Section 3, indicate the dollar amount or percentage of the current account balance you wish to transfer as well as the TNStars account number that will receive the transferred funds.
You may designate an individual or entity to act as your agent with limited authority to view and/or transact business within your TNStars account(s) by completing the Limited Power of Attorney Form. This form also allows you to modify or revoke the Limited Power of Attorney Authorization for the agent.

 

Use Your Funds

When it’s time to start paying for your child’s education, you can access your TNStars funds for qualified higher education expenses by submitting a Withdrawal Request Form. Withdrawal Requests must be initiated by the Account Owner, but can be made payable to the Account Owner, the Beneficiary, or an institution of higher education. Funds will be issued via check. Contributed funds are only available for withdrawal after a strict 21 day holding period.
